If A Child Discloses That They Have Been Abused

Canberra Rape Crisis Centre

If a child discloses to you that they have been sexually assaulted it is important that you:

  • Believe them and listen
  • Reassure them that it is not their fault nor their responsibility
  • Make their safety your priority
  • Depending on the age of your child it is important to include them in any decision making
  • Contact the Rape Crisis Centre on 6247 2525, Family Services or the Police Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team to talk about what is happening. Please see Other Useful Contacts.
  • Keep your child informed about what is happening
  • Respect your child’s privacy but be there for them when they need you
  • Be open about your own distress but at the same time be aware that your child isn’t responsible for it.
