The Community Engagement Program (CEP) at CRCC provides education, training, outreach and other community engagement activities focused primarily on primary and secondary prevention of sexual violence, as well as on the social determinants, drivers, and responses to sexual violence in our community.
Broadly speaking, primary prevention refers to preventing violence before it happens by addressing the underlying social drivers and causes of violence. Primary prevention addresses harmful attitudes, norms, practices, structures and power imbalances that underpin violence.
Secondary prevention refers to early intervention practices that occur when the risk of violence is already present. Secondary prevention involves working with individuals or groups identified as being more vulnerable, or being at a higher risk of experiencing violence. This might involve providing information and training to vulnerable groups about sexual violence, their legal rights, available support services, or developing resources to help people understand and recognise abuse.
Primary and secondary prevention at CRCC adopt a holistic and individually tailored approach, involving on-the-ground efforts that engage individuals, groups, and communities. Given that the drivers of sexual violence play out at every level of society, our CEP program engages with the community and not-for-profit sector, non-government members, government departments, service providers in the private sector, schools and education institutions, as well as in the public advocacy domain. In addition, CRCC works collaboratively within service provision systems in the ACT and surrounding regions to inform and influence social policy, practice standards, and legal reform, in order to improve services and supports for victim survivors of sexual violence (tertiary prevention).
CRCC provides a variety of resources, education sessions, and training workshops for workplaces (both non-government and government sectors), schools, universities, sport and recreation clubs, and health and community services.
Sessions are designed specifically to meet the needs of the requesting agency, and may include different aspects of social drivers, effects, healthy relationships, and responses to various forms of sexual violence.
If you are looking to expand your general knowledge around sexual violence, or upskill in a specific area of support, CRCC can accommodate your needs.
